Asking & Giving Suggestions and Offering To Do Something


Hiii everyone, I'm Lutfi. I will explain the material about asking and giving suggestions and offering to do something.

Suggesting and Offering



> Social fuction : to facilitate interpersonal communication between different people

Expressions/ Gambits
When making suggestions we often use the following expressions.

            Why don’t we …
            We could …
            What about …
            How about …
            I suggest that …
            You might want to change …
            I think …
            I don’t think …
            Let's...

Examples of Suggestion
    –         Let’s go to the library.
    –         Let’s go to movies.
    –         Why don’t you do homework                             before going out?
    –         We could eat at home today
    –         What about eating at the new                             place?
    –         How about going to Sam’s place                         first                       
    –         I suggest that we call it day.
    –         You need to change your slepping                      habbits.                    
    –         I think you should go and meet                          her.
    –          I think we should do it this way.

Example accepting suggestion
- Thats a good idea
- Alright
- Good/ok/alright
- That sounds like a good suggestion
- Thats interesting
- Yes, you're right
- Thanks for the suggestion

Example refusing suggestion
- No, i dont think so
- I dont think we should
- Well, not really
- No, lets
- Thats too boring

Let’s take a look at sentence structure to suggest something.
Subject+Verb+That+Object
I  Suggest That He clean his room                   
We  recommend That She read “ the hunger games "                                                 

Giving offer

Examples of offers
–         May I give you a hand?
–         Can I help you?
–         Shall I bring you some tea?
–         Would you like another piece of cake?
–         How about I help you with this?
–         Can I clean the car for you?
–         Shall I help you with your homework?
–         I will do the washing, if you like.

Accepting offers 
> Thank you.
>Yes, please.
>I’d like it very much.
>Thank you, I would.
>That would be very nice.

Declining Offers 
>No, thanks.
>No, I really won’t, thank you.
>Not for me thanks.
>No, thanks. I’m not hungry.
>Thank you, but I’m on a diet.
>That’s very kind. Unfortunately, I’d like to, but...

Let’s take a look at sentence structure to offer something.
Modal Verb + Subject +Object
Would    you       care for another cup of tea

Shall       We        take you there
Could       I           offer you something?
Will     You       have tea with that?

That is the explanations about asking & giving suggeations and offering to do something. There is a difference between suggestion and offer suggestion when we give an idea or suggestion to be considered for others before that person makes a decision. while the offer is an offer given to others in the form of assistance or other things such as offering food or drinks. Next, i want to give example about suggestion.

 A : Marsella Indrianti
 B : Lutfi Kharisma

A:  Hi lutfi, how are you?
B : Hi sela , i'm fine how about you?
A : I'm fine too. By the way, i'm having a              problem

B : what is that?
A : I was invited by my parents this  saturday but I need to learn and do a lot of homework. Should I accept the invitation of my parents?
 B : I think you should go with your parents. Then on sunday you study and do homework.
 A : Okay fi ,thanks. I will think about it.
 B : You're welcome.

Conclusion
From the dialogue above which is an expression of suggestion, that is :
Asking Suggestion
> Should I accept the invitation of my                 parents?
Giving Suggestion
> I think you should go with your parents. Then on sunday you study and do homework.

B : Yes, please I was a little bit hard to find a drink
A : Alright, would you like me to get you some tea?

A : Yes, would you mind to wait here for a while?
B : Yes, of course. Thank you

Conclusion
Giving offer
> Can I help you
> Would you like me to get you some tea?

Accepting an offer
> Thank you it is very kind of you
> Yes, of course. Thank you
